Jamaica Blue - doing coffee Fairtrade Style!

I was really excited this past week to see a Cafe advertising the availability of fairtrade coffee!
Jamaica Blue at Casuarina Square Shopping Centre (directly above the food court) in NT - has posters all over the place letting consumers know that they can ask for their coffee to be made with fairtrade coffee beans. What an awesome step forward! Even the big names of coffee, Gloria Jean's and Starbucks haven't had the guts to go fairtrade publicly.

The only issue - I hate the taste of coffee! To all those who love it, drink up fairtrade like its going out of fashion!

Hi Jo!!

Subway has just opened here in Healesville (the first major chain fast food joint in town!!!). They now have organic, certified fair trade coffee! There's a big poster in the window. And, you can now buy instant fair trade in Coles here.

Fair trade has been something the Catholic movement has been championing for at least 15 years with the Young Christian Workers movement and others...the fact that it is so readily avalible in Coles speaks of the years of godly work that the Catholic Church has done. Thank God for the Catholics and their wittness to the Salvation Army

Thanks for your input, I wasn't aware that Catholics had any input into Fair-trade ;o) you learn something new every day!

That said, I wouldn't say that fair trade is 'readily available' in Coles stores. It is something you have to hunt for and for those people that have not yet learned about the issues fair trade is based upon, there would be no inclination for them to even look for fair trade products.

There is only one line of fairtrade chocolate available in supermarkets (Green & Blacks 'Maya Gold' orange-flavoured dark chocolate), this is usually located in the topmost corner, tucked away as far as you can get from the entrance to the aisle. That says to me that supermarkets, although they are STOCKING a small selection of fairtrade products, they aren't actually SUPPORTING fairtrade.

We still have a long way to go, chocolate companies, supermarkets, Salvos and Catholics alike, lets not settle down and consider the job done. And lets not pretend this is a competition, 'out-fairtrading' each other should never be the focus - this is for the workers overseas who are struggling to find the basics to survive! If we focus on serving them and seeking God's justice in this issue, we will certainly go further in helping things change for them.

Bring it on Lord!
